Back in the Swing of Things

We’ve been back at SMUS for a little over a week now and so much has already transpired. Mr. Snowden literally brought us back into the swing of things with an impromptu golf lesson in Chapel. Bolton’s own Mikhail was the recipient of the lesson and gamely stood on stage as he was schooled in the art of teeing off.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves, first it is important to look back on all the great things the boys did over the break. While many enjoyed vacations abroad or time with family, a few spent some of their time on various service an cultural trips around the world. Edward performed in Europe with Bolton houseparent Mr. Butterfield; Jacky did service in Argentina; Chen, Clement, Laurent, Derry and Richard H toured Japan; and Adrian, Joel and Nick made a positive impact in Nicaragua with Bolton houseparent Mr. Shaw.  Here are some great photos from the latter-most trip. We are very proud of our adventurers and it is great to see that service can be so much fun!

When we all got back we immediately got into our classes and sports. Dimitri and Artem were out for Rugby practice several days before the first day of school. The reason for the early start was the annual Boot Game, which we all went out to cheer for. Dimitri and Artem got some great playing time while Edi and Pasit were ready to step up if needed. Mr. Daum coached from the touch line. They boys played with heart against the bigger Oak Bay team and are ready for a rematch during Alumni Weekend.

By the first weekend the Grade 11s were all packed for the annual Bolton Grade 11 Leadership Retreat to a small island cabin. There, the boys were able to get to know each other better, try their leadership and communications skills against challenges, and get away from their phones!  Mr. McCloskey showed the boys how to start a fire with a bow. Mr. Baer and Mr. Shaw brought a boat and so the boys also helped drop some crab traps, and clean crabs. Saturday night we were treated to rock crab appetizers on the deck before roasting smokies over the fire. It was a great weekend!

But when we got back on Sunday, it was straight to Housegames. The boys competed in badminton and Kickball and showed their usual sportsmanship and teamwork!
