Bolton Reunion and Alumni Weekend

This weekend was Alumni Weekend at the school.  This is a yearly event that brings back former students, faculty and houseparents.  It features a wide range of events including sporting matches, an international marketplace, school tours, reunions, and lots of activities for children.  Here are some of the Bolton boys volunteering with the set up and parking in the morning.

And Mike and Jeronimo helping out during the event selling food and running various events, while Mr. Butterfield enjoyed a Beaver Tail made by Will earlier in the day.  Check out the SMUS website later this week for full coverage of the weekend’s events.

The Bolton common room was a warm and dry space from which to watch the rugby game this afternoon.  SMUS beat rival Oak Bay in the annual Boot Game in front of a large crowd that braved the chilly rain.

This year was an especially meaningful Alumni weekend as Senior Houseparent, Mr. Bateman, organized a Bolton Alumni reunion and invited former house parents and students to join the current boys in a celebration of Bolton.  We had alumnus from as far back as 1959 and as recently as 2015.  We also had three former Senior Houseparents and 3 former student Heads of House, including Timmy who Skyped in from his architecture class at the University of Cornell!  Many others who were unable to attend sent their regrets and wished all the current Bolton Boys the very best.

Mr. Bateman gave a moving toast as he unveiled the three new awards created in honour of three former Senior Houseparents who exemplified the motto of our house, “Brotherhood, Honour, Strength”.

It was a lovely afternoon of reminiscing, making new friends and sharing a common love for Bolton House.  There is no doubt that this will become an annual tradition and we look forward to welcoming back our current grade 12’s in the years to come.

In addition to all the events taking place over the weekend, there were many events taking place during the week as well.  There was a staff acoustic concert at lunch on Friday in which Mr. Bateman belted out a rendition of Radiohead and Mr. Shaw and Mr. Daum participated in slightly less harmonious renditions of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on the ukulele.  Will and David X presented at the school assembly on Tuesday and the Sun Center continues to grow everyday.

Saturday morning also had the annual Leaver’s Chapel.  All grade 12 students are given a “Grad Bear” and words of wisdom were shared by alumnus.  Here are most of the grade 12 Bolton Boys after the ceremony (Edi, Alex were away rowing and Derry was volunteering at the extravaganza and Jack is cut out on the edge.. sorry Jack!).

What a great weekend for Bolton House.  Go Bo!
